I did my undergraduate degree in art & design and education studies. Afterwards, I completed my postgraduate degree which then lead me to teaching. I spent the next 15 years as a teacher. Throughout this time, I found that my values didn’t align with the school systems’ values so I left teaching to become a full time artist.
My name is Hajrah Ayub and I’m from Kent. My work is based in the art studio, ArtHub studios which is in Greenwich, London. I am a designer and artist. I work with both ceramics and glass. The products that I make are ceramic tiles, ceramic/glass trinkets, ceramic/glass bowls, and jewelry. I love working with all of these mediums because not only do I find them to be very therapeutic, I find that the process of creating art is naturally relaxing.
Art is part of my mindfulness practice and it is one of the tools that I incorporate to help me get through my struggles with mental health.
My inspiration comes from geometric patterns. I draw the patterns and then use them in the design and produce them for my art work.
From a young age, I have always been naturally drawn to patterns, and in particular, geometric patterns. I’ve always loved how the patterns can be both complex but also simple at the same time. Furthermore, my inspiration as an artist also derives from my attraction to colours. I love to work with different colours that complement each other but also additionally work in harmony with one another
In addition to creating my own art, I run workshops for different communities. This is an integral part of my work, as it connects my teaching experience to my art experience.
Creating art has a positive benefit to my own mental health and well-being, therefore, it brings me joy to be able to share this with others. This is due to my own experiences of seeing first-hand the importance and benefit of art & creativity, which is why I ultimately run workshops in drawing geometrical patterns and clay workshops.
my journey of creating art made me wonder why it was having such a positive inpact on my well being and mental health. This made me research the benefits of art and creativiy. In my research I discover that close paying attention activities stimulates the frontal region of the brain, which helps regulates other mental activitie. Paying attention to the senses brings as to the present and v CV May helps promote senses.
the rhythmic, repetitive activities that make use of our hands and deliver an ‘effort-bas reward’ at the end could alter your brain chemistry by boosting serotonin, dopa Maine and oxytocin.
All art activities promote expression and working collaboratively creates connection and eases feeling of loneliness and sadnes.
becoming better at a skill allows the brain to form new connections, which not only prevents cognitive decline but also gives feelings of self-esteem.
